Specialization and the firm in Renaissance Italian art

Renaissance Italian painters are among the most innovative and consequential artists in human history. They were also successful managers business owners, always search of commissions for their workshops. Indeed, ability as entrepreneurs was just important talent painting. This paper develops a framework to understand organization production paintings—frescoes altarpieces—during Renaissance. We argue that faced trade-off between costly delegation sacrifice gains from specialization performance those tasks necessary executing Applied historical record, our accounts several features this industry: why dabbled entrepreneurs; they performed duties did not require any artistic talent; set up firms aid them execution some while delegating other independent contractors.
